“SHIMANEXT” In search of possibilities in the future Shimane, this was the catch phrase of the speech contest which was held in our Island 7 th of July. Same day students of our island presented their essays on theme of “What we can do for the world”. While I was busy with this program, I was unable to write my blog for one month.
The nine foreigners, who currently live in Shimane prefecture, express their ideas about the Shimane. The participants were varied to students, housewives and people who work in Japan. That was one of the specialties of the contest. I'm heartily grateful for their cooperation to make this event a success.
We started to accept applications from the end of April. One week then two weeks past. But I didn't get any of the applications. Frankly speaking I started worrying about the contest. If no one applies for the speech contest, what shall I do? Is it better to change the place? Because if you do it in Matue, you can just finish it in 3or 4 hours, just go there participate and come back short and sweet. But when it comes to AMA, it takes two days if you want to participate for the contest. So I thought it might be the biggest reason for not having any application. But if you do it in a city it's just a speech contest and it just a kokuzai koryu.
There was a particular reason that's why I want to hold this event in my Island, because many of the foreigners who live in Shimane even didn't know, where Oki is. Only very few of them have already visit Oki. On the other side the kids of our island have only seen very few foreigners. So if we can have the Speech contest in my island, foreigners get chance to visit the Island and our kids get a chance to meet foreigners. So the intension is perfect. But nothing will start if no one applies for the contest.
Then I received a one E-mail from a professor of Shimane University. In his mail, he had mentioned that some of the students of university are preparing for the speech contest. Finally he has said he wish all the best for the contest. That mail was a great relief for me and brought me a great courage.
When it comes close to the application deadline, I started to receive some applications. Finally there were nine applicants for the speech contest. They became the finalist to participate for the speech contest.
It was the first time in Shimane to have a speech contest, and frankly speaking there were many mistakes when it put in to the actions. Personally I was able to learn a lot from the event. The most important thing which I learned was the importance of “interactions”. Many of the speakers talked about how they were helpless when they first came to Japan, without speaking Japanese and without knowing Japanese culture and customs. Then they explained how kindly people helped them in their day today life. Many of them emphasized that; they will help the foreigners when they go back to their home country.
I also felt the importance of interaction while doing this event. Even though it was me to propose the event, with out the immense support from all the others, this event was not a success. As a foreigner there are many things that we achieve without the help of others here in Japan, Especially when it comes to official documents in Japanese. Even if you write something you have to have a proofreading from Japanese person. In such cases people around me helped a lot. Having interaction of many people we were able to finish the speech contest.
The students of the island also presented their essays on the same stage. Many of the contents were excellent and they were forced us to rethink about our perspective regarding the world. I was very happy to hear their ideas and wish that it will be great 、 if they grow up like this and if they didn't change their hearts even when they become adults.
In August 22 nd and 23 rd , we have planned to conduct an immersion camp for the kids in our Island. The intention of the program is to make children more familiar to English and make them more aware of the world.
English is the door to the world and English is not a language that only spoken by native speakers. Many people who speak different languages use English as a common language to communicate with each other. So our mottos are, don't try to make mistakes and let's try together to communicate with people from different countries using English.
If you can communicate in English, first you can get to know many things about the world, then you can help the many people of the world, who are suffering from poverty, war and etc. if you are a person who likes children and who likes English, this will be a great chance. Why don't you join with us to spend your summer vacation in a meaningful manner? |
