| Do you speak English too? Yes
So how many languages, do you speak? 3 languages
Which is easier for you? Japanese or English
These are the questions which troubled me many times. This dialogue continues like this.
You know we Japanese study English for almost 10years in junior high, high school and university, but still many of the Japanese cannot speak English. Because we are shy to speak in front of people.
I see.
Why do you speak Japanese so fluently?
Where did you study Japanese?
What is your secret for mastering language? Mmmm. Again I’m in a trouble.
I have heard these kinds of dialogues many times for my six years in Japan. So I have really thought many times, why many of the Japanese do not speak English. How the Japanese students are differ from the students of my country. If we compare these two countries Japanese people should speak better English. Because they have more facilities, they have better environment to study English.
I started to learn English at age 10 and studied English to high school. But difference to Japan was we didn’t have native English teachers and we didn’t have international exchanges. But when we up to junior high, we spontaneously came to know the importance of English. We came to know that if we speak English we can get a good job in future. That was the only thing that steered us to study English. I think that is the main difference between Sri Lankan students and Japanese students. As we know in the past, there was no much difference among the English speakers and non English speakers in Japan. So there was no such a clear vision to study English.
For me and the most students of Sri Lanka, English was not a communication tool but a tool to earn money. In Sri Lanka we call “English” the sword, because people use English to cut others. English is used as a weapon to show their social status. If you are in a high class social gathering and you don’t know English, all the shame on you. Even if you talk in mother tongue, they will continue to speak in English. Sri Lanka is a multiethnic country and you may think that people use English to communicate among ethnic groups. But reality is totally different. Even you are from a same ethnic group and you have your own mother tongue still they use English as the medium of communication, because it’s a shame to speak in mother tongue in a distinguish gathering. There is a stereotype in Japan that most, foreigners speak English. But in the case of my country, only 20% of population speaks English and most of them are from capital or urban area. Most of the time they are rich and they have enormous social powers. Its 100% clear that as a multiethnic nation we must speak English to communicate with other nationalities. But it happens very rarely and we are suffering from a war for 25years, due to the lack of communication among the different ethnic groups.
My university life greatly affected me to change my attitude on English. There were students from 70 different countries and we used as a medium of communication. There were native speakers and nonnative speakers too. Our proficiency on English was different and sometimes it was hard to understand, what there are trying to say. Someone may be felt the same, when I was speaking. But we tried harder to communicate with each other. I came to know that more we speak with people more we can know about the world.
Every person has his own mother tongue and English pronunciation is different from person to person due to the language they speak from the childhood. For example, if we said ten nonnative speakers to pronounce “Hello” they will pronounce it in 10 different ways. For Japanese its “ Haro” so what’s the big problem, if the partner can understand you. The important thing is how hard you are trying to convey your idea and how hard your opponent tries to understand you
Having these kinds of concepts on the mind we were try to convey our feelings to the kids of this island. The name was “JUMP TO THE WORLD”. The specialty of the program was the project leader was an islander, who has already jumped to the world. So she wanted to convey her feelings towards the world and English. 14 kids of our island participated to the camp and they tried to speak in English with the different people of the world. We had eight different countries in our staff and there were both native and nonnative speakers. We did some game in English and first day we tried to show them English is fun and many people of the world speak in English to communicate with each other. Second day we organized a mini world trip. Children visited Myanmar, Indonesia, Hawaii and Sri Lanka. They did different activities in different countries. Finally they performed a mini drama with the English they practiced for two days.
This is a comment of one of the students who participated for the camp
“First, I thought I didn’t want to participate for the camp. I thought English is boring and difficult. But while doing the games and talking with the different people of different countries, gradually it became interesting. One day I really want to do a home stay. I think I can use the things I learned today”.
I think most of the students, who participated for the camp, may be in the same feeling. But most of them said that, they wanted to participate again. I think this is the greatest achievement we made through the project. As many of you know, it’s impossible to learn English in two days. But they may learn the importance of English. I thanked them all for participation. Because they were brave enough to face the challenge of speaking in English and I think they took a very important step towards their future and little hearts may found the some kind of goal to achieve in the future.
There is a new trend in cities to teach English to their kids. Parents spent huge amount of money for English. They send their kids to spoken English classes and sometimes international schools. But I’m afraid that, they are studying English with the same intention that I studied English. If you can speak in English you can get a job in multinational firms. Even it’s a Japanese company; you can get a better payment. I think the people are eager to learn English with the intentions like this. Its up to you to decide, why do you want to speak English. But if it’s only for earn money and find a better job, Japan is getting behind the international society. Japanese society is getting more and more multicultural and one out of twenty marriages is an international marriage. I think we need people not only who can speak English, but the people who can understand the hearts of the others. English is just a communication tool and it doesn’t matter how fluent you are, but how far you want to understand the feelings of others.
This time in Jump camp, we didn’t talk about the dark side of the world. We just said English is fun, world is interesting. But there is a day that these kids will understand the dark side of the world. They will see that, there are street children, child soldiers and children in sex industry. They will also see the, effect of war and the plight of the people of those countries.
As a Jump member I want the kids to understand the reality of the world one day and use their communication ability to do some service for the people of this world. As the Jump staff, we have a huge challenge in front of us to teach the kids, not only for speak in English but also to speak to the heart of the people. |
