| According to the dictionary, Kachikan(sense of values)means “ The things to be based on when evaluating something. Values are different for person to person, man to women, city to village, also country to country. We have heard many people talk about difference of values.
Last Week I attended the graduation ceremony of my alma mater. Same time I got the chance to meet with my host family parents, owner of the restaurant I worked and the Kondo family. These are the people who helped me immensely when I first came to Japan. So it is a pleasure to meet them and talk with them about our past memories and also the present situation of the Beppu city.
After long time I had a lengthy chat with Kondo san. Mr. Kondo is having a barber saloon in Beppu and he is having some attractive discount packages for international students too. Also he is speaking fluent English and which makes international students to use this place regularly. This time, while having a hair cut, we are talking about the APU, Beppu city and the international students.
Sameera, there was an offer from a T.V stations to take part in their documentary program. You know how hard it is to; work with T.V program while doing our business.
But we accept the offer because we want the community to know about the real situation of the international students who are living in Beppu community and how hard the work to earn their life expenses and tuition fees.
There are more than 1500 international students in Beppu and some of them even didn’t have a chance of home stay. There are no enough home stay acceptances in the community. If we can convey a good massage through this program towards the Japanese community and make a good relation between international students and community that’s what we want to achieve though this T.V documentary. I think that is the gentleness of Mr. Kondo who is always with international students, in their needs.
International exchanges are not always full of fun. If you really want to experience the international exchange you have to go deep within. Once I read in a book, White dominated American society is doing campaigns against discrimination of black community, which means there are discriminations against black. I think same thing can be applied to the international exchanges of Japan. We need many International exchanges because; we do not want to go deep with international community. If every one is like Mr. Kondo, we do not need to organize international exchange events, because spontaneously he is doing international exchanges.
When I was a student, I didn’t understand the great deed, what he is engaging in. but after doing speech contest for foreigners and internship for international students in my island, I came to know how hard it is to work with the different people of the different countries, who have their own values of life. Especially when you are become the coordinator between the Japanese society and the foreign community , it’s really a subtle work. You have to be very patience and you have to be a good listener.
When we first came to Japan, we have our own way of thinking that we practiced in our home countries for long period of time. We behave in the same manner we behave in our home countries and some times we are making trouble to the society by behaving in the same manner which we were practicing in our countries
But we do not have any intention that we are doing something bad. For example, Lets think that, night home party. In my country it’s something normal, you can raise your voices, you can beat drums, and you can party until dawn. Of course my neighbor can not sleep. But he is not saying any thing, cause next day he may have his home party. So I can not sleep as he did. So we have used to tolerate each other. But story is different in Japan. Normally its unwritten rule that you do not make big noises after 9’o clock. But we do not know these things at the beginning and we do not think that, we are doing something bad.
That’s why we need the people like Kondo san to explain us those unwritten rules of Japanese society. Because even you can study Japanese in university, you can not learn those things from university. But this role as a cushion between Japanese community and the international students is really difficult and it’s an essential thing, to make the good relation between the community and the foreigners.
. It’s a very delicate job and most of the people do not want to take this risk. This may be the one reason that we do not have enough host families, because its need the dedication and you should have the curiosity to understand each other.
Even its already two years since my graduation I still have contacts with my host family, owner of the place I did my part time and also the people like Mr. Kondo. Even tough its hard at the beginning, they tried to understand me, they praise me, and they scold me, they were happy, when I was happy and they were sad, when I was sad.
But this time when I visited Beppu, I felt that, there is a huge gap between the community and international students. The life has become easier for international students and comparing with the time we studied, it has become easy to find part time jobs and apartments. You have many senior students from your country and you can ask them about the stuff about living in Japan. So they might don’t want to have a closer relations with Japanese community.
That may be good for the both parties, but they have lose the opportunity learn about the Japanese society, Specially the Japanese traditions, customs and unwritten rules.
I felt that they are just fallows Japanese rules, because they have to do it, they have not understand it from their hearts.
Many people say that I’m like Japanese. I think it’s not something that I achieved. It’s because of those people who helped me my living in Japan. Their life styles have inspired me to understand the Japanese culture. They didn’t force me to understand the culture; I spontaneously came to know about the Japanese culture. the most important thing is I also had a chance to know the logic behind it.
The talk I had with Kondo san, stirred me to rethink about the different values of different people. As we all know, Japanese society is moving faster towards the multicultural society. Every marriage out of 20 marriages is an international marriage in Japan We must have to move with the different people, who are having different values, even we like it or not. In the case of my country, we are a multiethnic nation and we have different nationalities, which have different values of life. As the result of not respecting the values of each others, it has developed to a never ending war.
People have different values of life, which they inherited from their family from their culture, and from their country, once they come to a different country, they are facing a cultural shock and they faced it difficult to understand that society. In such a conditions
We need the people like Mr. Kondo, who can be the real cushion between the society and the international students. If there are more and more people like him, there will be no international students who are shouting after the, 9’o clock, there will be more host families in Japan, and finally there will be no war in the world. I wish all the very best for his documentary program. |
