It’s already 6 years since I first came to Japan. Using Ofuro for long hours and rolling in Tatami and drinking Sochu while biting Shishamo had become the daily customs of the life. Since 3 years of absence I visited my home country for two weeks vacation. Here are the some of the highlights of my trip to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Wedding.
The main intention of my journey is to take part in my brother’s wedding. As my family is Sinhala Buddhist, the wedding rituals were done by the Sinhala Buddhist manner. The climax of the Sinhala wedding is the Poruwa ceremony. Bride and bride groom placed in a decorated stage and wedding rituals were done in that sacred place. First bride groom feeds Kiri Bata (milk rice) to bride and then milk. Then he rapped the white cloth on bride’s waist. Finally a special priest, joins their small fingers together and pours water from above. Finally they exchange finger rings.
It’s the first time for me to think deeply about these rituals and found that each and every of them have special meaning. As a whole, Poruwa is the place that Bride groom promises to all the other family members that, he is going to protect the bride for whole life and keep her happy in rest of the life. At the end of the first day of the wedding, the couple has to go down on their knees and respect all the elders of the both families.
On the second day of the wedding, bride’s family is invited to the bride groom’s house. The second day of the wedding is call “Home coming”, which means that bride is coming to bride grooms house for living. In the past both days of the wedding were held in a bride and bride groom’s houses. It’s not an easy job to prepare food for hundreds of people and arrange the sittings for the huge number of people. In Japan, you can just contact wedding ceremonial company and they will do everything for you. You just have to go there. Short and sweet, it’s just a one day.
In Sri; Lanka they get ready for wedding at least for 2 months. You may thing, what a foolish thing to spend such a time and money while, you are having an easier way to do it. You may have seen the elegant weddings of the Japan, which they spend thousands of money for one day. But believe me; most of the Sri Lankan will not like such kind of wedding ceremonies. The wedding day is not such important to them. What is important to them is the process of the wedding. When the wedding is near by, the relations and neighbors come to help. They are working while chatting and there are many tea breaks. Some of the dialogues are like this.
“Even he is going to marry soon; I still remember that I had changed his napkins when he was a child.”
Wedding is not just a marriage of a couple, it also a joining of two families and also a great chance to family members and neighbors to get together and work together.
The friend who came to pick me up
As my home town is far away from the air port, I called one of my friends who live in Colombo to pick me up at the Air port. He came on time but his parents were also with him. Its mid night and I was in a great puzzle that, why his parents came there too. I asked my friend that why you bothered your parents too. He was laughing and said that, they didn’t come to meet you, they are afraid of left me alone at the night. The security is not that good.
I feel so sorry for my friend and his parents too. Even though I read news everyday, from the internet, there are things that you can not understand, until you are visiting that particular place.
Culture shock returns
Culture shock is not an unfamiliar word for many of us. But counter culture shock is a something that new to some of you. Something that was normal to you for long time has become something very extraordinary for you. There were many counter culture shocks in my trip to Sri Lanka. For example, there is no high ways in Sri Lanka and roads have not divided in to up and down routes. When you want to over take a vehicle, you have to jump in to the other side of the road and drive.
One day I was on my way to Colombo and I sat next to the driver and he was driving really fast. Once he jumps to the other side of the road, a big bus was in front of our vehicle and I thought that’s the end of my life. I closed my eyes and screamed.
But it was only me who had frightened from the incident and others were asking me what happened to you. I said I was in sleep and saw a terrible dream, and apologize from them.
Life
War is a topic that, most of us do not want to talk about. Even though it just a two weeks, I badly experienced the effects of the war. There was a fearful attacked on Sri Lankan Air force based in Anuradhapura. After the attacked, the counter measures were taken to tighten the security all over the island specially the business capital Colombo. Every vehicle was thoroughly checked before entering to the capital. In the case of public transportation, we have to get down from the bus and show our all the belongings to the security forces. My I Pod made a trouble in one check point, because I pods are still new to Sri Lanka and may be they have seen it to first time. They asked my many things about it and I explained at my best to convince them that this is to listen to music. My face cut is kind of different from average Sri Lankan and my ascent is also different. I was there for about 30 minuets and finally they allowed me to go.
Transportation is just a one example which shows the ill effect of the war. But there are many sectors that had badly affected by the war. Generally inflation is so high and I surprised that I had to pay twice, thrice for the same product which I bought 3 years a go. This time I had a chance to meet some of the Japanese, who are living in Sri Lanka. How good if there is no war in this country. There are many Japanese who like to support Sri Lanka, who want to do business with Sri Lanka but war is the barrier for them. I greatly felt that, war has not only taken the happiness of the present generation of but also the happiness of the future generations of this country.
The security forces and police officers can be seen in very often in the road side and road blocks are every where in the country. The news about the war is always in the T.V and there are numerous posters and banners to support the war heroes. The problem is even the little children also grow up with in this environment. I don’t think that I have to talk about the fate of the children who are growing up in war zone. There are children who have born with the war and who are dieing with the war.
I greatly felt that how happy the Japanese kids. They do not have any experience of loosing of their fathers because of war. They do not have any experience of loosing there houses because of war. In Japan We have different news of suicide of the children due to the rag. I think they have not understood the how important this life is. There are children who have never gone to the school. Most of the time they do not have any thing to eat, some of them have loosen their families due to the war. But still they try their best to live. So how can you loose your life, just for bulling?
Where is your car?
Meeting of the friends is another happiest thing of the journey. We were like to talk about the days we had in the high school and my friends are eager to know about the Japan, Especially about the computers and vehicle. They can not understand why I’m still driving a 50cc bike. Their life style has changed a lot and there are standards to measure how successful you’re in life. How good car you are driving, how much you are earning and how beautiful your wife or girl are those standards. Job is to earn money and for them, it is not important that what kind of work you done for earn that money.
On the way
The person next to me on the flight was also a Sri Lankan. He was in a sorrowful mood and he didn’t take any meal. Finally I came to know that he was overstayed. He has come to Japan just 4 months ago and started to work month ago. But he was arrested with the other foreign workers. He said he spent 7 million to come to Japan and in that case his family had to sell most of the real-estates. Besides that they have to loan some money for high interest. He was crying and said, how should I face to my parents, how should I live from now. He said that his dream was to arrange a trip to his parents to visit India, where the Buddha was born. I said nothing, but listen to him until he fell in to sleep.
After 2 weeks vacation I came to Japan and I was waiting my luggage. One guy came and asked me “are you from Sri Lanka. I said yes. Then he asked me “Do you know where the Islam church in Tokyo is. I said I do not know, but I can guide you to the information center. He said he came to work in Japan and he does not have any friends in Japan. I didn’t have much time to my train and I left him at the information center.
Japan is the dream country for the many of the people. They believe that they can earn lot of money here and then they can spend a luxurious life in their home countries. So they are willing to work even they are over stayed. Statistics said that one forth of the foreign labor forces of the Japan is illegal workers. There are people who work for 10 years illegally. And also the cases like which I met. I can say one thing, even they live in Japan for five years or ten years, they will not role in the Tatami like me and they will not drink Sochu with Sashim. Finally they will not love Japan.
