Since this is my first column for 2008 let me begin by wishing all you a year of happiness and contentment. I intended to write about the New Year of Amacho. I thought I should experience it in various ways because last year I was only able to experience the making of Kadomatsu (Pine and Bamboo decoration). There was an ideal event in Oki Shizen Mura for New Year and it’s about spending New Year in self sufficient way like the old days of Japan. I was very keen to take part in it. but I had a meeting of sri lankan residence of Japan. On 28th in Tokyo and I was thinking of returning to the island on 30th of December.
On 30th I took the very first Shinkansen and came half way. But in okayama I came to know that the ferry has stopped due to the bad weather. It’s just another incident which shows that, the island life is interacting with nature and our life is greatly controlled by the nature.
Any way I had to console my self by thinking that I had a rare chance to meet different people and get some valuable ideas. Sri Lankans who are playing active roles in various fields, gathered in the meeting. There were Sri Lankans who came to Japan 20 years ago and I had a chance to talk with them about different topics. We started to talk about Sri Lankan politics, war and business opportunities between Sri Lanka and Japan.
They said, infrastructure activities will be start soon in the areas where The Sri Lankan govenrmnet captured from terrorist and they will need new instrument to do those projects as quick as possible. So those kind of instruments will have high demand in near future.
Having talking to them, one thing I understood was, even they have parted from home for long time, they haven’t forget about their motherland. Another thing which I came to know is, they only talk about how to get from japan, but they do not talk about how do something for japan or with japan.
They were the people who have stand on their feet with out any help from the society. I think 20 years ago, there were only few foreigners in Japan comparing to today and also Japan may did not know how to negotiate with foreigners. So there were no many international exchange events, where Japanese and foreigners communicate with. So they may not have enough knowledge about Japanese culture and they might not have any connection with Japanese society.
On of the senior Sri Lankan who was in my table, talked about his old days in Japan. He said it was hard to find cheap apartments and they stayed 11 people in a one apartment. He said the toilet is always so stink in the morning. There were no shower room or hot water and he used to go to Sento. But after the part time in the late night the Sento has closed and he said he used to was him self in the kitchen sink.
I think they had lot of hardship and they accomplished their goals because of the courage they have and the willingness of be successive. On my way back, in train I was thinking about those great people. The outside was snowing and the scenery from the glass window was wonderful and the pure White Mountains recall me the drama Oshin.
When it’s reaching to Yonago, there was an announcement confirming that, ferry has terminated it service due to the bad weather. I was afraid that it’s not possible to find and hotel to stay. I had nothing to do but to but to ask help from the one and only acquaintance in Matsue the owner of the Sri Lankan restaurant Indo-or
He said first come to the restaurant and then we can talk about the proceedings. I reach there around 3.00 p.m and he was kind enough to reserve me a hotel. Next day is the 31st and it is one of the most important days for Japanese. He invited me to his home and we had the dinner with his parents. His parents have once visited Sri Lanka and they were talking about their memories about Sri Lanka.
I remember the days that my parents visited Japan. My mom was so inquisitive about the things of Japan, which she experience for first time in Japan and she was asking me hundreds of question, starting from “Why”. For example, why the skirt is so short of high school girls and why women are smoking.
Like my mom, my friend’s father also had seen in Sri Lanka in a different angle. He explained me about the one thing he saw in a Sri Lankan school. He said there are students of barefoot and another group of students with slippers. There are students with shoes and very few of them have both stoking and shoes.
I have seen this scene frequently, when I was in Sri Lanka and didn’t find anything strange about it. But after his talk, I felt that this is the typical structure of Sri Lankan society. And this is the indicator of the social gap between rich and poor. I felt that his power of observation was really a splendid one.
This time when I leave to Tokyo, I have forgotten to bring my music player with me. so I borrowed a music player of my Japanese friend and there was a nice song which I was listing repeatedly. The artist is Yoshida Takuro and the song title is “Watashiwa Kyo Made Ikite Mimashita” which means that (I lived until today)
I think it’s really close to my life and in the lyrics it says, I am what I’m today because of the people who help me.
As you know white color foreigners, who work in Japan get their bonus on December and get a long vacation for New Year and they visit their home countries or to a country where they can get maximum fun. This is how an average foreign worker enjoyed their New Year vacation. No one will be troubled and know one will be heart.
I am completely different from them and always give troubled to the people, as I troubled my friend in Matue. Even though it’s a troubled to the person, this is the one way I understood about people and there is saying that “friend in need friend indeed”.
Once u got the help of a person, you will feel that you should help him when he is in need.I think this how strong relationship is building.
Finally I understood the reason why many Sri Lankan whom I’m talked with only saying “From Japan” with out saying “With Japan” or “For Japan”
Its like, you do not love your kids when they are small but expect them to love you and care you when you are an old. I think Japan didn’t love them enough and so they do not love Japan.
Another type is you give enough money to your kids and expect them to love you or care about you. I think this is the case of white color foreign workers of Japan. |
